Hello Friends!
While Labor Day is one of the year's most awaited and travelled holidays, and generally marks the end of the Summer Travel Season, it seems that the origins of Labor Day was a mystery to many... including me. So, a couple years ago I did a little research to learn more... if you are interested, read on.
👉 BUT, before I begin... just a friendly reminder that our Biggest Labor Day Sale Ever ends today, Labor Day, at Midnight Pacific, so don't miss it! 10% Off & Free Shipping and All orders over $2500 get 15% Off!
See below for details.
The idea of a Labor Day originated in the late 1800's as a way for the Labor Movement to celebrate America's Workers. As you can imagine it was controversial from many parts. The industrialists of the era were engaged in epic battles with labor leaders and for good reason. Working conditions in many industries were horrific. From child labor to impossible hours to complete lack of safety standards.
Creating Labor Day was a brilliant political move to bring attention to the American Worker.
While there are competing stories as to its origin, the first official celebration of Labor Day was a parade held on September 5, 1882. The first Monday of September was chosen as a good middle point between July 4 and Thanksgiving.
In 1887 Oregon was the first state to make it a statewide holiday and by 1894 thirty states had adopted it. Congress made it an official holiday that same year.
Over time it became the un-official end of Summer, marked by the trend for taking vacations that ended on Labor Day weekend. Concurrently schools started to adopt the Labor Day weekend as the mark of the new school year. A date that has continued to evolve as calls for longer school years have echoed through the halls of local communities.
It is believed that the beginning of the school year, and back to school shopping was the impetus behind the now ubiquitous Labor Day sale.
Today Labor Day is a welcome 3 day weekend for many workers across the country, including our own team at Metalcloak.
And while it is marked by travel, tourism and epic BBQ's, Labor Day is a reminder to all of us that the American Worker, no matter the job or the skill level, sets a standard that is still envied by many around the world for truly unique levels of focus, efficiency, dedication and productivity.
America would not be the powerhouse that it is today without each and every one of you.
